During our 2024 Expedition Week,
Harrow International Shenzhen
teamed up with international experts
to create a variety of activities
turning the world into
an outdoor classroom.
These initiatives aim to cultivate
students’ global perspectives and
cross-cultural communication skills,
enabling them to grow through exploration.
Let’s reflect on this extraordinary week.
Sean Knox
Principal Deputy Head
Expedition week is a key component of our commitment to holistic education. This is because it facilitates our students to live the Harrow values outside of the confines of the classroom, to meaningfully engage with and practice courage, honour, humility and fellowship in the real world. Through a variety of service and cultural immersion activities, students develop their competency and confidence in collaboration, problem-solving, communication, creative thinking, and initiative. This, alongside a strong academic and extra-curricular profile, provides a solid foundation for our students to apply for top universities and grow into the leaders of tomorrow.

Visiting Harrow UK was an unforgettable experience. As I walked through the grand halls and historic buildings, I felt the weight of tradition and academic excellence all around me. The beautifully maintained campus, with its impressive architecture, exudes a sense of timelessness. Discovering the legacy of the 7th Earl of Shaftesbury, whose contributions to social reform and education are deeply intertwined with Harrow’s history made the visit even more exciting. Strolling through the grounds, I could almost imagine the Earl’s presence, inspiring students to achieve greatness.

On the UK trip, we went to countless landmarks. Some examples of where we went would be Oxford University, Shakespeare Globe Theatre, Buckingham Palace, Harrow on the Hill, and more. Out of all the fantastic experiences we gained, my favourite was the Wicked musical. I have never seen an actual musical before, but it was a marvellous experience for me and the most memorable event of the trip. The UK trip helped me take an interest in new topics and opened my mindset to different cultures. It was a wonderful opportunity to enjoy myself and learn at the same time.

The joy of travel lies not in the destination but in the journey itself. This school trip provided a unique opportunity: instead of merely being a tourist, I felt more like a local, observing my surroundings from a fresh perspective.
We visited various museums, covering topics from natural history and science to health, including the NASA museum. One of the most striking moments for me was seeing the Saturn V rocket from the Apollo programme quietly resting in the hangar. We also experienced American baseball culture and visited the University of Houston and Texas A&M University.

The trip was fascinating and gave me a deeper understanding of science and technology. Not only did we get to visit NASA, but we also had the chance to learn more about the natural sciences, human body, and health.
The trip’s most unforgettable memory is when people rolled down a little slope in a park. The idea came from Casso telling us that rolling down the hill would bring good fortune for our next exam. Though I was the photographer and captured every priceless moment, I regret that I was unable to roll down the hill with everyone else. Having all my friends by my side, I felt delighted since friends are the most important component of the trip.
万绿湖
Wanlü Lake Trip

The scenes of classmates working together to set up tents and cook delicious food are particularly memorable. Everyone divided the work and cooperated. We all sat together and shared the delicious food. At night, we exchanged interesting stories about the day with each other, and the laughter echoed in the air. It was full of a sense of accomplishment. This unity and warmth have become the most profound memories of the journey.
桂林
Guilin Trip
Longsheng is the place with the highest concentration of ethnic minorities in northern Guangxi and the first Autonomous County in central and southern China. Students set foot on the Longji Rice Terraces to learn about and experience the local culture.

My Guilin trip highlight was building a new pathway high up in the mountains for the farmers to walk up and down safely. We made signs around the village to remind tourists not to enter the rice fields and not feed, touch, or tease the wildlife there. We also held a little talent show where the students showcased their skills, and some of the locals performed some singing and traditional dances for us. It was a great experience going to a less develpoed place in China, and I had an amazing time!
黄山
Huangshan Trip
The misty peaks of Huangshan have been inspiring Chinese artists for generations. Huangshan, as well as the rest of the area’s majestic geography, is a sharp contrast to the now humble ancient Anhui villages that were once so prosperous.

My trip to Huangshan last month was truly unforgettable. Not only did I gain valuable insights into Hui-style architecture and local tea culture, but I also participated in an exciting cooking competition, MasterChef. All participants had to team up to prepare five dishes. In my group, everyone had a clear role and was eager to help each other, which made the experience both efficient and enjoyable. In the end, we won second place and had the pleasure of savoring the delicious dishes we had cooked. It was a fulfilling and enlightening experience!
贵州
Guizhou Trip
Guizhou is a gateway to the rich and diverse ethnic cultures of Southwest China. Here, students explore the colourful traditions and lifestyles of the Miao and Dong minorities.

The Guizhou trip was an enjoyable and enriching experience. We participated in a cave camping night, where we explored fish fossils and learned about their formation and significance. Additionally, my friends and I engaged in traditional dance lessons, sewing activities, and the crafting of silver necklaces, enhancing our cultural understanding and practical skills.
厦门
Xiamen Trip
Fujian is a coastal province in the subtropical zone of China where mangroves are an important ecosystem along the seashore and at the estuaries of the rivers and streams. The students gained in-depth knowledge of marine ecosystems and local culture in Xiamen.

I had an unprecedented experience during the expedition week to Xiamen. I experienced kayaking, planting mangroves, learning about mangroves, testing water quality, beachcombing, cycling, making model tulous and integrating into the local Fujian culture. Xiamen has a unique harmonious blend of modernity and tradition. The air is filled with the scent of the ocean, intertwined with the tempting aromas wafting from the street vendors. In addition, the enthusiasm of the locals also showed me their hospitality and enthusiasm for sharing culture, creating a warm atmosphere that made me feel at home even in a different province. The conversation went smoothly, spanning the gap between language and culture, leaving me with unforgettable memories.
Through these challenges,
they grew together,
gaining valuable experiences.
This Expedition Week will undoubtedly
become an unforgettable chapter
in the lives of Harrovians.
