Jeremy(9
Eleanor(10
Caesar(9
Nadezhda(9
Johnny(10
数百个小时精益求精的音乐剧目排练;
史瑞克和菲奥娜的妆容要化近两个小时;
大反派法尔奎德需全程跪着演出;
巨龙角色全程需带着头套表演,边唱边跳;
Michael(9
Irene(8
Zhenni(10

24 students,
31 orchestra and stage crew members, and more than
1,000 audience members
enjoyed 3 amazing performances
of “Shrek the Musical,”
marking the successful conclusion of
Harrow International Shenzhen’s
annual musical.
Faculty, parents, crew members,
and spectators followed
the Harrovians on their
200-day transformative journey.
From initially stumbling over their lines to fluently reciting dialogues and finally delivering emotive performances, we witnessed the young actors’ swift growth.
Shrek – Jeremy(Y9)
“In my journey through Shrek the Musical, most of the cast, including me, had no prior knowledge of how to create and perform a real musical show on stage. However, with the support of teachers and everyone else on the team, I have mastered the character of Shrek.”
Fiona – Eleanor(Y10)
“When I first found out I was a lead character, I was nervous; however, my teachers helped me feel comfortable when singing and acting. Specifically with my singing, I needed some support when it came to confidence with my voice.”
The students of Harrow International Shenzhen not only brought the script’s characters to life but also used their expressions, actions, and voices to emotionally engage with the audience.
Donkey – Caesar(Y9)
“I think understanding the essence of Donkey was crucial. He’s not just a sidekick, he’s Shrek’s loyal and sometimes annoying companion who brings humor and heart to the story. To convey this, I delved deep into the character’s quirks, motivations and mannerisms. From his witty “Lao Gan Ma” joke to his endearing moments of vulnerability, every aspect of Donkey’s personality was carefully crafted to resonate with the audience.”
Pinocchio and Teen Fiona
– Nadezhda(Y9)
“There are some instances in the show when Pinocchio lies and during those moments, the pit band would play a “boop” kind of noise like how Pinocchio’s nose grows when he lies and I tilt my head back slightly to meme the growing of the nose. When acting as teen Fiona, I try to act like a delusional teenager like how the song conveys how Fiona longs for a knight in shining armour to come rescue her and give her the happy ending every princess like her should have.”
The orchestra was essential to the musical, infusing the performances with harmony and rhythm that brought scenes to life.
Cello – Johnny(Y10)
“I am honored to have been invited by Mr. Ware to perform in the musical “Shrek.” The experience was fascinating and thrilling, as having a live band accompany the play was a delightful departure from my usual practice routines. Performing alongside my teachers and classmates was truly an incredible experience!”
During the production of “Shrek the Musical,” students embarked on a journey of self-discovery, paralleling their characters. Director Lidia Burton pointed out that during this action-filled mission, unexpected love fills the air as we all learn to not judge someone on their appearances.
SHREK: THE MUSICAL JR.
Have you thought about
the tremendous effort
put in by all the actors
and crew in this
delightful stage production?
They devoted hundreds of hours to perfecting the musical; Shrek and Fiona’s makeup took about two hours; Lord Farquaad performed entirely on his knees; the dragon wore a headpiece while singing and dancing; and all props, such as costumes, socks, wigs, and gloves, were handcrafted.
The collective efforts of the entire team ensured the show’s success.
Farquaad – Jeremy(Y9)
“The most important factor for me before and during this production was to have fun. Being nervous and anxious will bring you despair! Not enjoying what you’re doing, causes boredom in your audience. Trying to create as little distance between yourself and the character is also important. I did this by placing myself in Farquaad’s tiny shoes enabling me to feel his insolence.”
Dragon – Irene(Y9)
“One of the biggest challenges I faced in presenting this character mainly revolve around wearing the Dragon head and performing in it. Singing inside feels stuffy and hot. As I can only see the outside through the mouth of the Dragon, it’s quite difficult to know when and where I should be on stage.”
The backstage crew, completely out of sight, held the critical responsibility of ensuring a flawless performance.
Stage Manager – Zhenni(Y10)
“Between the flurry of props, costumes, and set changes, I experienced the rush of making things happen behind the scenes. From swiftly managing set pieces to ensuring seamless transitions, every moment was a thrilling challenge. The crew worked tirelessly to bring the magical world of Shrek to life. It was a truly unforgettable experience that taught me the power of teamwork and the hidden magic that exists beyond the spotlight.”
